The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles #2)

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together.Desperate to save her life, Lias erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny....

It should be noted that I wasn't the biggest fan of The Kiss of Deception but I found the ending so promising that I really wanted to give this series another chance.

If you loved The Kiss of Deception, don't let this review make you anxious, I'm pretty sure you will like this one more than the first. If you are like me however, and thought TKoD was very meh then this review is for you. To summarize: I was hoping THoB would remedy many things I disliked in TKoD but that didn't happen un

Everyone fears second-book syndrome. I knew the minute I opened this book that I'd have nothing to fear. I was wildly impressed with the artful creation of The Kiss of Deception, and it's no surprise that The Heart of Betrayal captivated my heart as well.

I know many complain that The Kiss of Deception is slow. I urge you, if you fe

This one might win the award for toughest review of 2017.

You might remember my earlier review for the first book in the series: The Kiss of Deception, which I loved and showered praise on. While I was really excited to crack into this one, and still really enjoyed it, I felt a little let down.

One of the biggest disappointments to me in this book revolved around the situation Lia found herself in. "But Bentley," you say, "isn't t

I think this book fell victim to a very specific problem I have now with YA fantasy books. I read book 1 before I read Six of Crows, and it was pretty good. I read this one after I read Six of Crows and suddenly, I've read better and everything in this was cliche and the characters weren't that great and the dialogue was cheesy and the magic system was unrealistic and underexplained.

    So. Yeah.

Maybe if I'd read this closer to book one I would have enjoyed it, but reading this my eyes were rooooll

Although I feel like the plot didn't move forward for quite a while, I REALLY enjoyed this book and felt like I was more engaged with the narrative than I was with book 1. I listened to the audiobook and the cast of narrators and voice acting was superb. I enjoyed being back in this world, seeing the characters for who they really are (instead of all the disguises from book 1) and especially enjoyed seeing how fierce Lia is! I really have no idea where the story is going after that ending, but I ...more

This sequel ripped me apart and put me back together again. I was constantly wondering what other twist and turn was going to happen, which person should they trust. And what exactly was going on between the political parties between the kingdoms. I loved that this was set in Venda for we get to see another kingdom that doesn't rely on its resources but on its leader. Even if that leader happens to be the Komizar. Chapters are shor
