When one of psychiatrist Kate Wolfe's patients commits suicide, she finds herself struggling to stay afloat. A disturbed teen, Maddie Ward, is left at her hospital - and Maddie knows more about Kate than she should. In fact, Maddie's mother, Nellie, was the key witness in the murder case of Kate's sister several years earlier.

There are quite a few twists and turns in this novel. It definitely kept me guessing, but the final reveal just didn't quite ring true to me - it felt more like it came fr

Dr Kate Wolfe became a psychiatrist because her mother had mental illness and committed suicide when Kate was a teenager. Kate's teenage years are further filled with tragedy as her younger sister was murdered. Kate has tried to work through her issues but she remains wracked with guilt because she left her sister alone that night. Kate is a workaholic who devotes herself to her young clients. I have to be honest and say that I hadn’t heard of Alice Blanchard before and I hadn’t read either of her previous books. If there’s one thing that I like it’s discovering a new author and discovering that they have other books for me to catch up on. The synopsis of this book appealed to me and it was with some excitement that I picked up ‘A Breath After Drowning’. I was not to be disappointed as I really enjoyed reading it but more about that in a bit.

I really felt for Kate Wolfe. She is a chil

I often see psychological thrillers described as 'gripping' or 'riveting' but it is not often that I actually completely agree that that is what they actually are! In A Breath after Drowning, we have a masterclass in thriller writing, where the tension ratchets up with each chapter and the reader is kept on their toes, never quite sure who to trust. Nothing can be taken at face value. I went around and around in circles, eyeing up various suspects, never quite sure which one was hiding in plain ...more

A Breath After Drowning was my first introduction to the work of Alice Blanchard. This psychological thriller kept me guessing, and the farther into the story I got, the faster I had to read because I couldn't wait to find out how it ended. I felt enough empathy for Kate that it was as though a personal friend were going through what she was going through, and I just couldn't put the book down.
